It Holland, its a bit different. on my level of education we teach our student for 4 years. when a student fails a year, than he will have to do the education in 5 years. we speak about classes, not about grades. every year is a class. the students have to finish primaryschool and i teach on a secondaryschool. the ages of my students are 12 till 16.

In Croatia students in 1st grade start mathematics with pyramids, sphere, cone and prisms, as concept. Calculations of area and volume is in 8th grade. Also shapes rectangle, square, triangle and circle are mentioned in all classes from 1st - 8th (our primary school curriculum).

In secondary school our students study the main theory's off maths (Pitagora and Euclide), in 6th - 7th and 8th grade they study concepts and simple calculations. In primary school Italian students simply study how to build geometrical figures.
